Dear Film Lovers,
This Women's Month, the Mbawula Youth Film Festival proudly honours the creative power, resilience, and storytelling brilliance of women in film. On the 9th of August 2025, the festival will host a special screening event showcasing an exceptional lineup of films directed by powerful women voices who are shifting narratives and breaking boundaries through cinema.
The film selection includes Woman of Substance, Umlindelo, Letters to the Society, Why The Cattle Wait, Umhlaba Wokhokho and Black People Don't Get Depressed, a compelling mix of narratives that reflect on personal strength, community struggles, historical memory, land, mental health, and justice. These stories are not only beautifully crafted but also carry urgent social commentary rooted in lived experiences and womanhood.
Each film offers a unique lens into issues that affect women, their communities, and the legacy they carry told with care, courage and creative mastery. By centering female directors, Mbawula Youth Film Festival aims to inspire young women in film and ignite critical conversations around representation, healing, and visibility.
Join us for this unforgettable Women's Day celebration as we gather the experience, reflect, and applaud the powerful contributions of women filmmakers who continue to light the fire of change through storytelling.
